PWR
Clinical Services
PWR Health Consultants provides specialized clinical services to
individuals who are unable to participate in life activities and unable
to work.
PWR also accepts referrals from health care providers,
case managers, employers and insurers regarding patients who do
not respond to conventional treatments.
PWR's approach is person-centered and goal oriented. The
individual or patient is empowered to make decisions about his
or her return to function and to work.
With PWR's support, barriers are identified and resolved, and activity
takes place in a no-blame environment within mutually agreed-upon timelines.
Patient Services: Empowering the
Individual
Dr. Lisa Doupe, Principal of PWR Health Consultants, works with
the individual to identify abilities and barriers that prevent return
to
function and to work. Barriers may
include:
- Individual Vulnerability:
age, family history and family stress,
change in family role, lack of social supports, etc.
- Pre-Diagnosis Factors:
education, income, depression,
chronic pain, absence from work, denial of problem, etc.
- Post-Diagnosis Factors:
doctor shopping, non-compliance
with referral and/or treatment plan, impairment, etc.
As required, PWR will coordinate specialized
tests or consultations,
such as vocational rehabilitation, physical abilities assessments,
impairment evaluations, and psychological counseling.
A return to work plan is developed jointly and implemented by the
individual and Dr. Doupe. This plan may include a graduated return
to work or problem solving with the employer or the insurer. Dr.
Doupe supports the individual throughout this process.
Occupational Medicine: Empowering the System
While Dr. Doupe works with the individual to resolve personal
barriers, another level of analysis takes place. Barriers posed by
policies and practices of different stakeholders of the system,
including employer, insurers and government agencies and
departments, are identified and addressed. PWR sets in motion an
integrated approach to problem solving with all stakeholders.
Based on this approach, PWR provides specialized programs that
meet the needs of individuals, employers and insurers in the
following areas:
- Return to Work:
An inability to return to work from any cause,
including workplace accident, auto accident, and personal
issues, is resolved.
- Performance Issues:
When workers are not performing
optimally, PWR identifies and addresses the root cause.
- Independent Medical Examinations:
PWR focuses on
identifying the patient's abilities (not disabilities), and
addressing the barriers to return to work at the levels of the
person, workplace and insurance system. Problems
associated with traditional Independent Medical Examinations
are avoided.
- Complex Case Management:
Traditional approaches to
return to work are ineffective for individuals with complex case
histories. PWR uses a new methodology based on leading
edge work of the Ontario Medical Association (Committee on
Work and Health) and the American College of Occupational
and Environmental Medicine (Delayed Return to Work model).
- Fitness for Duty:
PWR provides a fitness-for-duty assessment.
Specialized tests, such as simulated work settings and
functional abilities evaluations, are coordinated as required.
